Cortisol is produced daily in the adrenal glands. Even when there is no stress, cortisol is produced and released into the blood in a 24-hour rhythm. The highest concentration of it can be measured in the morning, then its production basically decreases during the day.

Blood cortisol levels are not always the same. Cortisol is released in a 24-hour rhythm, also called a circadian rhythm. The release of cortisol is highest in the morning, decreases in the afternoon and is low in the evening.
Normal values vary by laboratory. In the morning, a normal value is between 150 and 700 nmol/L; in the afternoon it is only 100 to 400 nmol/L. In the evening, there should be less than 210 nmol/L in the blood.
