MCV Meaning
MCV stands for mean corpuscular volume and says something about the average size of the red blood cell. Under certain conditions, the size of the red blood cell changes.
MCV Normal value
The normal value for mean red blood cell volume (MCV) is between 86.1 and 93.1 femtoliters (fL) for both men and women.
MCV too High
A vitamin B12 deficiency, on the other hand, leads to an increased MCV and therefore to an enlarged red blood cell.
MCV too Low
For example, an iron deficiency can lead to a smaller MCV and therefore a smaller red blood cell.
MCV Value in Blood
Result | Unit | Value min-max | Age | Gender | Biomarker interpretation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Deviant | fl | 0 - 82 | 18 - 100 | Man & Woman | The MCV is outside the normal range and is too low. The interpretation depends on other blood values. |
Caution | fl | 82 - 86.1 | 18 - 100 | Man & Woman | The MCV is still within the normal range, but is on the low side. |
Normal | fl | 86.1 - 93.1 | 18 - 100 | Man & Woman | The MCV is good. |
