Hemoglobin Meaning
Hb stands for hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein and is a component of red blood cells (erythrocytes). Hemoglobin contains four iron molecules. These iron molecules are capable of binding one oxygen molecule each.
Hemoglobin Normal Value
The normal range for hemoglobin (HB) is between 8.9 and 10.36 mmol/L for men and between 7.2 and 9.2 mmol/L for women.
Hemoglobin too high
Excessive amounts of hemoglobin can cause health problems such as cardiovascular disease or polycythemia. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and high blood pressure.
Hemoglobin too low
Low hemoglobin levels, for example as a result of heavy menstrual bleeding, can cause symptoms of exhaustion and fatigue.
