Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) Meaning
Erythrocytes use haemoglobin to transport oxygen through the blood. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen to all body tissues using the protein haemoglobin.
Erythrocytes Normal value
The normal range for red blood cell (erythrocyte) count is between 4.83 and 5.8 million per microliter (/pL) in men and between 4.1 and 4.94 million per microliter (/pL) in women.
A shortage of red blood cells is called anaemia and can have various causes: loss of red blood cells, insufficient production of red blood cells or increased breakdown. There may also be an excess of red blood cells. The most common cause is a blood disorder called polycythaemia vera. This increases the risk of blood clots (thrombosis).
Erythrocytes Value in Blood
Result | Unit | Value min-max | Age | Gender | Biomarker interpretation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Deviant | / pL | 0 - 4.6 | 18 - 100 | Man | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is outside the normal range and is too low. |
Caution | / pL | 4.6 - 4.83 | 18 - 100 | Man | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is still within the normal range but is on the low side. |
Normal | / pL | 4.83 - 5.8 | 18 - 100 | Man | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is good. |
Caution | / pL | 5.8 - 6.1 | 18 - 100 | Man | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is still within the normal range but is on the high side. |
Deviant | / pL | 6.1 - 15 | 18 - 100 | Man | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is outside the normal range and is too high. |
Deviant | / pL | 0 - 3.9 | 18 - 100 | Woman | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is outside the normal range and is too low. Interpretation depends on other blood values. |
Caution | / pL | 3.9 - 4.1 | 18 - 100 | Woman | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is still within the normal range but is on the low side. |
Normal | / pL | 4.1 - 4.94 | 18 - 100 | Woman | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is good. |
Caution | / pL | 4.94 - 5.2 | 18 - 100 | Woman | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is still within the normal range but is on the high side. |
Deviant | / pL | 5.2 - 15 | 18 - 100 | Woman | The number of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is outside the normal range and is too high. |
