Chlamydia meaning

Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide, particularly among adolescents and young adults. The bacteria typically infect the urethra, the cervix, or the rectum.

The deceptive nature of chlamydia lies in the fact that the majority of infected individuals (up to 70% of women and 50% of men) experience few to no symptoms. As a result, the bacteria can be passed on unknowingly. If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to serious complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility in women, or epididymitis in men. A laboratory test based on urine or a swab is the only way to determine the presence of the infection with certainty.

Chlamydia values

When testing for chlamydia, the analysis does not look for a numerical value, but rather for the presence of the genetic material (DNA) of the bacteria. The result is therefore qualitative: positive or negative.

Chlamydia values in men and woman

Below is the interpretation of the chlamydia test results for men and woman ages 18-100.

  • Negative / Not detected: No chlamydia was detected in the test material. This means that you likely do not have a recent infection with the chlamydia bacteria. However, please take the window period into account; if the risky contact occurred very recently, repeating the test may be useful. Should you still experience symptoms consistent with an infection, it is wise to consult a physician for further investigation.
  • Positive: Chlamydia has been detected in the test material. This means you likely have an active infection with the chlamydia bacteria. It is strongly recommended to seek medical assistance for appropriate antibiotic treatment. It is also essential to inform (former) sexual partners to prevent further spread and reinfection.
