AST Meaning
AST stands for aspartate aminotransferase and is an enzyme that plays a key role in the metabolism of amino acids. It occurs in high concentrations in the liver and heart muscle tissue, but is also present in smaller amounts in skeletal muscles and the kidneys.
When damage occurs to cells in these organs, AST leaks into the bloodstream. An elevation of the AST level is therefore often an indication of liver or tissue damage. Because AST is not exclusively found in the liver, this value is almost always assessed in combination with other liver enzymes, such as ALT, to obtain an accurate picture of the cause.
