AST Meaning

AST stands for aspartate aminotransferase and is an enzyme that plays a key role in the metabolism of amino acids. It occurs in high concentrations in the liver and heart muscle tissue, but is also present in smaller amounts in skeletal muscles and the kidneys.

When damage occurs to cells in these organs, AST leaks into the bloodstream. An elevation of the AST level is therefore often an indication of liver or tissue damage. Because AST is not exclusively found in the liver, this value is almost always assessed in combination with other liver enzymes, such as ALT, to obtain an accurate picture of the cause.

AST Values and Interpretation in Men

Here you will find an overview of AST values in men, so you can see when your AST value is normal or high.

  • Normal:
An AST value in men between 0 and 47.5 U/L is considered normal. This indicates a good balance where there are no signs of acute damage to the liver or muscle tissue.
  • Caution:
When the value is between 47.5 and 50 U/L, the AST is still just within the normal range, but it is considered “caution.” This means the value is at the upper end of the healthy limit, which may be a reason to take a closer look at lifestyle factors or other liver values.
  • High:
If the value exceeds 50 U/L (with a measuring range up to 5000 U/L), it is considered abnormal and too high. This may indicate liver overload, inflammation, or tissue damage. The exact interpretation of this is highly dependent on the ratio with other liver enzymes.
  • Invalid:
A measurement result of 0 U/L is considered invalid. This usually indicates a technical problem during analysis or the fact that there was insufficient test material present to perform a reliable measurement.

AST Values and Interpretation in Women

For women, an AST value between 0 and 33.25 U/L is considered normal. This result indicates a healthy status of the organs in which this enzyme is active.

  • Normal:
An AST value in women between 0 and 33.25 U/L is considered normal. This indicates a good balance where there are no signs of acute damage to the liver or muscle tissue.
  • Caution:
When the value is between 33.25 and 35 U/L, the AST is still just within the normal range, but it is considered “caution.” This means the value is at the upper end of the healthy limit, which may be a reason to take a closer look at lifestyle factors or other liver values.
  • High:
If the value exceeds 35 U/L (with a measuring range up to 5000 U/L), it is considered abnormal and too high.
