Mycoplasma self-test

Mycoplasm is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) caused by the Mycoplasma genitalium bacteria. This bacterium can cause complaints, especially in men, in the form of an inflammation of the urethra. Mycoplasma may possibly lead to inflammation of the cervix and/or fallopian tubes in women, but there is still insufficient consensus about this in medical science.
There is no standard testing for mycoplasma contamination in the Netherlands, which makes it difficult to determine how often mycoplasma occurs.
Testing for mycoplasma is often only carried out if symptoms persist and there is no evidence of infection with chlamydia or gonorrhea. However, research indicates that the prevalence of mycoplasma is somewhere between that of chlamydia and gonorrhea.
